What makes a fairy tale a fairy tale?
Matt Sandbank's Shadow Factory sets out to answer this question in its retelling of the classic story, "Rapunzel." Set in contemporary times, the heroine is locked away in an abandoned highrise building and lives at the mercy of Ms. Gothel, a twisted old lady posing as her grandmother.
All about love, loss, and loads of hair, this version of "Rapunzel," is told entirely through rhyming verse. By poking gentle fun at the fairy tale genre, it offers young audiences an opportunity to think more deeply about what they see and hear in familiar stories.
The performance--which is appropriate for grade levels K through 5-- lasts approximately 35 minutes, with an optional 5-10 minute puppet demonstration and Q&A session to follow. "Rapunzel" features some of Matt's most articulated, expressive shadow puppets to date.
